Lorenzo Roberto Almada - Biography

Lorenzo Roberto Almada has more than 30 years experience in serving the needs of communities through technology empowerment, education and social services. As an accomplished Program Director and Grant Writer, it has always been his passion to identify the needs of the community, acquire funding to address those needs and implement programs designed with the participation and support of all interested stakeholders. His innovative techniques have won him numerous forms of recognition from elected officials and community groups.

Since the late 1980’s, Lorenzo has sought to insure that the Hispanic community would become part of the information superhighway early on rather than to allow for it to develop without Hispanic participation. To this end, Lorenzo served on the Mayor’s Council of Technology Advisors in the city of Chicago and lectured throughout the entire Midwest and East Coast on the topic of “Cyberactivism”. Lorenzo also served as a registered technology consultant for two national non-profits; PROCEED, based in New York and, LLEGO, based in Washington, D.C.

Lorenzo was one of the first Hispanics to acquire a Master’s Degree in Foreign Language Education with an emphasis on English as a Second Language, so that he could help to serve the needs of the Hispanic community during the period surrounding the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. During this period, Lorenzo served as the Director of ESL Programs at Triton College in ‘River Grove, Illinois while also serving on the Board of Directors for the Instituto del Progreso Latino in Chicago.

After returning to his hometown of Los Angeles at the turn of the millennium, Lorenzo worked very closely with veterans groups and was honored to receive two Congressional citations for his efforts from Congresswomen Hilda Solis and Grace Napolitano. During this same period Lorenzo was also honored to assist in the election campaign of now Senate Majority Leader Gloria Romero of California. During their years together in college at UC Riverside, Lorenzo and Gloria served as President and Vice-President, respectively, of the Chicano Graduate Student Association.

Since locating in Tucson, Arizona, Lorenzo has served as the Director of the Luz Southside Coalition where he was able to assist in bringing in over 3.5 million dollars in grant money to serve the needs of the community. Lorenzo also designed and implemented the largest and most successful Financial Literacy project in the country under HSBC funding. Between the beginning of 2005 and the end of 2007 Lorenzo had the distinct pleasure of working with Dr. John Arnold and PPEP, Inc. where he held the title of Community Development Officer. Today Lorenzo works as a private consultant in the area of Community Development.

Lorenzo holds a Doctorate Degree in Sociology from Regents University in California, a Master’s Degree in Foreign Language Education from West Virginia University, a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy from Cal State Fullerton and a Social Science Degree from Chaffee College in Alta Loma California.
